The Runway Hairstyle I’d Try if I Wasn’t Such a Chicken

tibi fall/winter 2014

Though I’d like to think of myself of someone who takes fashion risks — mostly as they relate to beauty — it’s really not the case. I’m not sure why I don’t take the plunge and go for the platinum strands I’ve always wanted or a short pixie cut, but I just haven’t. I always seem to talk myself out of it — too much upkeep, I like braiding too much, it’s so not “me”, etc., etc. One of these days I’ll have to just suck it up and go for it. Until then, I’ll continue to post looks I’ll try once I have the cojones to so. This look was created by Aveda global creative director Antoinette Beenders for the Tibi show. I love how she took a classic middle-parted style and gave it edge with a braid straight down the middle. A “mini mohawk” is what she called it. Easy enough to do at home, but a look that would definitely garner attention. Here’s how to recreate it:

Step 1: Spritz Aveda Pure Abundance Style Prep, $24 on dry hair to add texture.

Step 2: Separate out a one-inch section of hair down the middle of your head.

Step 3: Create an inverted braid from the front of your hairline to the back of your crown and secure with an elastic.

Step 4: Add a slight wave to the rest of your hair by creating three to four very loose braids with your hanging hair.

Step 5: Press a flat iron down the length of your braids before letting them out.

Step 6: Finish with Aveda Air Control Hairspray, $25, or if your hair is super fine, use Aveda Control Force Hairspray, $27.

Will you try this look? And tell me, which styles or colors would you go for if you weren’t too chicken?

  1. This is pretty cute! It took me a few seconds to actually notice the braid.

    Great pick!
